More than 5 million people died as a result of the 1998-2003 Congolese War. The formal end of the war in 2003 brought hope for peace and democracy.
Today, the whole pot is boiling. Armed conflict is growing in the east. Rape, gang rape, and re-rape are widespread. Democracy is floundering. The government is unable to stop armed factions, including the Congolese military, from looting, raping, and mining conflict minerals for personal gain.
