Action 1. International Election Watch 2011

On June 20, the Democratic Republic of the Congo issued invitations for International Election Observers. Last week, the European Union said yes! 

Now, let's get the governments of Canada, the USA and South Africa to support the DR Congo.Take action!

Presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in the DR Congo on November 28, 2011. These elections must be internationally acclaimed as free and fair or there is a very real risk that the current conflict will escalate. An explosion of violence in the Congo would threaten the fragile peace in neighbouring Rwanda, Uganda and the new South Sudan.

Action 2. The Peace Dividend

Urge foreign companies operating in the DR Congo to donate to projects in the eastern provinces that support livelihood training, microfinance and/or the peaceful resettlement of refugees and internally displaced persons. THIS is the Peace Dividend that is so desperately needed for peace, stability and prosperity. ON HOLD

YOUR INDIVIDUAL ACTION MAKES A DIFFERENCE

More than five million people died as a result of the 1998-2003 Congolese War, while the world's attention was diverted. The formal end of the war in 2003 and the democratic elections of 2006 brought hope for peace and democracy.

But today, the whole pot is boiling. Armed conflict is growing in the east. Democracy is floundering. Rule of law is absent. Civilians, soldiers and rebels alike know they can act with impunity – and do so. The government is unable to stop armed factions, including Congolese soldiers, from looting, raping, and mining conflict minerals for personal gain.

There are more than 2.5 million Congolese IDPs and refugees who had to flee their homes because of conflict.

Rape, gang rape, and re-rape are widespread. A new study found that 40% of females in eastern Congo and 23% of males had experienced sexual violence, and half of the population meet the criteria for post traumatic stress disorder. Half.

More than 5 million Congolese people died, while the world's attention was elsewhere. Each of us has an obligation to pay attention this time. Take action!
