Sri Lanka's 25-year civil war ended in May 2009 when the Armed Forces re-gained control over the country's entire territory and the separatist LTTE 'Tamil Tigers' admitted defeat.
Whether Sri Lanka enjoys long-term peace will depend largely on how the Government in victory treats its Tamil minority.
